Could your voice be the answer to getting people to LISTEN to you?

Could your voice be the answer to getting people to LISTEN to you?

Sat on the runway this summer, waiting for take-off. The air crew are standing by ready to deliver the inevitable safety briefing. They look bored. We feel bored. We’ve all been here before. I know it already…my belt is strapped, I know to brace and I’m frantically trying to keep my 3 year old from singing loud nursery rhymes.

And then the briefing starts…

Now. This steward knows how to rock the mic.

Amazingly, the energy on the plane shifts.

Rather than passively listening, his voice grabs our attention. It’s clear, assertive, direct.

In all my years of traveling, I’ve never seen this happen. Magazines are lowered, people stop talking, heads are lifted from phones.

We listen.

Even my three year old listens!

For just a minute, we connect with the enormity of sticking human beings in the air and the fact we should probably bother to learn what we need to do in an emergency.

This is the power of someone using their voice so it makes an IMPACT.

DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR VOICE?

Next time you’re briefing your team, pitching to a client, speaking on a podcast, connect with your voice.

Your pitch, melody, volume and tone, all combine to decide whether your audience listens to you, or not.

CONNECT WITH YOUR VOICE

Simple actions can make the world of difference when you need to talk to an audience.

  1. Humming…whether you’re in the shower, in the car or just walking to the office practice humming ahead of your talk or presentation. It’s a nice warm up for the vocal chords.
  2. Tongue twisters…we all know these from our childhood…’red lorry, yellow lorry’, ‘Peter Piper picked a peck…” a couple of tongue twisters before your meeting relaxes and warms up your tongue so you can present articulately.
  3. Breath…deep diaphragmatic breaths help gives your voice gravitas and credibility. So simple, and yet so many just don’t breath deeply enough!
